Song. Voices.

Photos of performance taken by R. Detinsky.
This was a collaboration with the artist Christina Della Giustina and a group of international artists.

I composed a melody consisting of three tones, referring to the structural complexity of Sutartinė, a polyphonic folk song from Eastern and North-Eastern Lithuania that dates back centuries. We chose not to have lyrics for the song in order to emphasise the importance of the voice by withdrawing it from language. The voice becomes an instrument itself.  The resulting song was performed live by the participants. The voices layered  in the weaving manner create a complex circling sound.

The masks that we wore while singing were made by the participants of the performance. Covering ourselves with the masks, we wanted to mask the fear of baring our natural vocies to an audience and instead concentrate fully on the sounds we were producing. Masks also represent our commonality, especially in coming together to create this sound and during the time of performance they made disappear our differences.
